POET POSTER SERIES

poster project…

Tasked with the assignment of creating a system of three posters with the purpose of informing passersby about a unique, fictional poetry event, this first-year typography project focused on unity, cohesion, and conceptualization.

Research

With such an emphasis on visually representing the selected poets for my posters, I conducted research on Patti Smith (left), JJJJerome Ellis (middle), and Charmaine Lee (right) comparing their similarity and differences to use as a conceptual reference.

“Getting hands on”

Encouraged to step away from the screen, I participated in a variety of workshops to photograph, collect, tear, layer, and manipulate type and textures in a multitude of ways to serve as a foundation for the later stages of my design process for these posters.

photoshop ideation

Using the imagery, textures, and ideas collected during the workshops from the previous stage, I digitally combined these elements into “mock” posters to serve as the foundation for my final series.

DIRECTIONS

Based on the ideas from the “mock” posters, I developed three main directions to consider for the overall series. Based on ideas of independence, repetition, and expression relating to the title of the event, these three concepts dove deeper into the messages of their respective poets.

Iteration/refinement

Working through stages of iteration, critique, and refinement, I developed each poster of the series to have its own visual presence but also related elements to keep them a part of a cohesive series.

the final three

Communicating ideas of fearless self-expression and personification, this poster series provides each poet with their own letterform to represent them. They stand on each page unshaken by their hostile and chaotic environments.
