A music flyer…

As a frequent regular at Fishbowl Live, being hired to design a flyer for one of their shows felt like a amazing opportunity to bring in the passion, energy, and creativity that I’ve gotten to witness firsthand into my own work.

Research

I felt that, to truly capture the spirit of Fishbowl Live, I needed to take the extra step and get to know the bands and their visual identities before I designed anything. I wanted my design to feel more personal to the bands than most other local flyers I’ve seen.

the details

More so than any other flyer I’ve ever worked on, I wanted this one to feel more personal to both the bands and the venue. To honor this and also allude to the DIY feel of “Fishbowl Live” and the local vendors that sell their work there, I decided to hand-draw a lot of aspects and started with an idea similar to patch-work jeans.

Sketching

Continuing with the DIY, street art aesthetic, I decided to create personalized logomarks for each band performing based on the research I had done on them prior. Beginning with pencil sketches, I eventually inked and scanned each design.

Directions

Before committing to a certain style or concept, I created flyer drafts exploring a few distinct directions. Although I chose my original idea, it was valuable to try these three directions, I and ultimately used pieces from each on a final result.

refinement

I spent time making small, incremental, stylist changes until I achieved a final result that satisfied both me and the client I was working for. Development of a project can be tedious, but it pays off in the end.

the FINAl product

With my final flyer, I wanted to achieve a design that went above and beyond to creatively express the identities of each of the bands that were performing. It also needed to reflect the DIY art and music communities that the Fishbowl is able to bring together collectively for their shows.
